Beliefs

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, commonly referred to as the Mormon Church, is not a new church.  Instead it is a restoration of the ancient true Church of Christ, and is based upon the same principles Jesus Christ set forth when He lived upon the earth. After His Crucifixion and the death of His Apostles, the principles of the gospel were corrupted, and unauthorized changes were made in the Church organization and the priesthood ordinances. Because of this corruption, the Lord removed the authority of the priesthood from the earth. This dwindling of truth and priesthood authority, which led to the “Dark Ages,” and the proliferation of various opposing Christian sects, is known as the Great Apostasy.

Mormon Joseph Smith First VisionMormons believe that the Church was again restored to the earth through the Prophet Joseph Smith. In the Doctrine and Covenants, the Lord declares the following: it “it is the only true and living Church upon the face of the whole earth.”

Soon after the founding of the Mormon Church, the Prophet Joseph Smith was questioned regarding the basic beliefs of the Church. In response, the Prophet was inspired to write the thirteen Articles of Faith. They contain simple statements of the main principles of the Mormon religion.
